Clifton Main Street Project
Clifton’s Main Street Project has celebrated over 15 years as a leader in the revitalization efforts of the historic downtown business district as well as the City of Clifton. Clifton Main Street’s approach to revitalization is to organize the downtown into a strong cohesive unit that works together and speaks for the betterment of the area. The program encourages appropriate, high quality design in maintenance, renovation, and reuse of downtown buildings. Good design projects a positive image for downtown and capitalizes on its unique historic character. Main Street also sponsors events that include the entire community and promotes a positive image of the downtown area to visitors. Three of the more popular events include, FallFest, Trick or Treat with Main Street and The Clifton Swirl. Clifton Main Street envisions downtown as an active place of prosperity and opportunity where businesses are profitable and the physical environment is pleasing.
In the past ten years, Clifton’s downtown has taken on life with its antiques malls, art galleries, public and performing arts, and a variety of food venues. Clifton is fortunate to have many nationally known artists living here and they have a vested interest in the success of downtown.
The Heritage Plaza project, featuring the life-size bronze “On the Banks of the Bosque,” began in 1997 and finished in 1999. In 2007, the Main Street Board of Directors renewed life to the Plaza and used a Texas Department of Agriculture grant along with private funding to replace the fountain with a more life like water feature, and planted trees, and Saint Augustine grass. This reinvestment into the City is estimated at $750,000.
Downtown has seen many changes since entering the Main Street Program in 1995, over $5 million has been reinvested in private and public money. Congratulations go to the CLIFTEX Theatre who recently won the Texas Downtown Association’s President’s Award for Best Renovation/Restoration. The CLIFTEX has been a catalyst in the revitalization of downtown. It created nightlife and an excitement that had been lost in years past. The renovation created a buzz and has invited media coverage that has brought great exposure to Clifton while serving as a model for other downtown property owners.
